Question 59: Polity and Governance
Which one of the following is part of the electoral college for the election of the President of India but does not form part of the forum for his impeachment?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The President is elected by an electoral college of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and the elected members of the State Legislative Assemblies (including Delhi and Puducherry). For impeachment (Article 61) only the two Houses of Parliament act, and all their members, elected or nominated, take part. So State Legislative Assemblies elect but do not impeach. Councils take part in neither.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Lok Sabha takes part in both the election and the impeachment.
- (b) The Rajya Sabha takes part in both the election and the impeachment.
- (c) Legislative Councils have no role in either the election or the impeachment.
- (d) Right: Assembly members elect the President but do not take part in the impeachment.
