Question 22: Geography

As per the 1991 Census, which one of the following states has a lower population density than the other three?

aSikkim
bNagaland
cMeghalaya
dManipur

AnswerThe answer is (a).

In the 1991 Census Sikkim had the lowest density of the four, well below Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur. It is a mountain state with steep slopes and little cultivable land, so few people live on each square kilometre. Remember: among Indian states, Arunachal Pradesh has the lowest population density of all, and Sikkim is among the lowest.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: Sikkim's density was the lowest of the four.
  • (b) Nagaland was denser than Sikkim.
  • (c) Meghalaya was denser than Sikkim.
  • (d) Manipur was denser than Sikkim, and denser than the other hill states listed.
