Question 16: History and Culture

Who among the following suggested the winding up of the Indian National Congress after India attained independence?

aC. Rajagopalachari
bAcharya Kripalani
cMahatma Gandhi
dJayaprakash Narain

AnswerThe answer is (c).

After independence Gandhi proposed that the Congress, having achieved its purpose as a freedom movement, be disbanded as a political party and turned into a Lok Sevak Sangh for social service. He drafted this in the last days of his life, in January 1948, but the Congress did not adopt it. Remember: Gandhi - disband the Congress, Lok Sevak Sangh.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Rajagopalachari was a senior Congress leader; he did not propose winding up the Congress.
  • (b) Kripalani was Congress president at independence; he did not propose its dissolution.
  • (c) Right: Gandhi suggested winding up the Congress as a political party.
  • (d) Jayaprakash Narayan and his fellow socialists left the Congress in 1948; he did not propose winding it up.
