Question 124: Science and Technology
A simple machine helps a person doing
aless work.
bthe same amount of work with lesser force.
cthe same amount of work.
dthe same amount of work much faster.
AnswerThe answer is (b).
A simple machine (lever, pulley, inclined plane) does not reduce the work done, since work output is at most work input. It lets the same work be done with a smaller force, applied over a longer distance, or in a more convenient direction. So the best answer is the same work with lesser force. Remember: machines trade force for distance, never for work.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) A machine cannot reduce the work needed, since energy is conserved.
- (b) Right: the same work with a smaller force.
- (c) True but incomplete; it leaves out how the machine helps, by reducing the force needed.
- (d) A machine does not speed up work; a smaller force acts over a longer distance.
