Question 103: Science and Technology
The nutritional deficiency condition that needs to be given top priority for remedial action in India today is
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Xerophthalmia, the eye disease caused by vitamin A deficiency that can end in blindness, was the deficiency needing top priority in India because it was widespread among children; the national programme gives vitamin A doses to young children to prevent nutritional blindness. Scurvy (vitamin C), rickets (vitamin D) and pellagra (niacin) are much less widespread. Remember: xerophthalmia - vitamin A.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Scurvy, from lack of vitamin C, is not the top priority.
- (b) Rickets, from lack of vitamin D, is less widespread.
- (c) Right: xerophthalmia, from vitamin A deficiency, needs top priority.
- (d) Pellagra, from lack of niacin, is localised.
