The term Yavanapriya, mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts, denoted
aa fine variety of Indian muslin
bivory
cdamsels sent to the Greek court for dance performance
dpepper
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Yavanapriya, 'dear to the Yavanas' (Greeks and Romans), was a name for pepper in ancient Sanskrit texts. Black pepper from the Malabar coast was one of the most valued exports of India to the Roman world. Other items in this trade included pearls, ivory, spices and fine cotton. Remember: Yavanapriya means pepper.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Fine muslin was an Indian export too, but Yavanapriya is not its name.
- (b) Ivory was also exported, but it is not what the term denotes.
- (c) The term does not refer to dancing girls sent to a Greek court.
- (d) Right: pepper, much sought by Greeks and Romans.
