Question 38: Economy and Social Development
What is the annual growth rate aimed at in the Eighth Five-Year Plan?
a5.6%
b6%
c6.5%
d7%
AnswerThe answer is (a).
The Eighth Five-Year Plan (1992-97) set an annual growth target of 5.6 per cent for the economy, a modest figure given that it began just after the 1991 balance-of-payments crisis and the start of reforms. In practice, growth in the plan period came out higher, at over 6 per cent. Remember: the Eighth Plan targeted 5.6 per cent.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: 5.6 per cent a year.
- (b) 6 per cent was not the Eighth Plan target.
- (c) 6.5 per cent was the target of the later Ninth Plan, not the Eighth.
- (d) 7 per cent is higher than the Eighth Plan aimed for.
