Opening · a definition

Cloud burst refers to the excessive precipitation caused by cumulonimbus clouds, accentuated by several climatological, physiographic and hydrological factors.

Mechanism of cloud burst

Body · points and prose

→ Cloud formation occurs with the condensation of water droplets at an altitude. → When sudden condensation takes place → due to excessively rapid evaporation or sudden cooling of large amounts of moisture → Cloud burst can occur, as the weight of water droplets becomes extremely heavy.

Occurence of cloud burst → usually occurs in hilly regions:

(a) Amarnath, Jammu & Kashmir 2022 → sudden flash floods caused due to heavy precipitation (10cm/hour) due to cloud burst. → Peaks of Himalayas obstruct the movement of clouds → orographic affects causes rainfall.

(b) Kedarnath cloud burst, Uttarakhand 2013. → excessive melting of glaciers → water pool for evaporation → orographic influence of Himalayas → sudden ascent of moisture → cloud burst.
