The subsidy regime in agriculture started since green revolution & continues to play a major role in Indian agriculture.
Body · points
Impact of subsidies on farmer's choice:
(1) High amount of Minimum Support Price for Rice and wheat ↳ encourages farmers to resort to sow Paddy & wheat as seen in Indo-Gangetic plains.
(2) Very less choice of farmers to go for sowing vegetables, as they are not covered in MSP.
(3) presence of Fair & Remunerative price for Sugarcane ↳ Major thrust for its increased adoption & making India to surpass Brazil in production.
(4) Non-inclusion of other farmers enterprise
like Fishery, poultry, Beekeeping under MSP disincentives farmers in adopting integrated farming system.
(5) Inputs subsidies for fertilizers enhanced adoption of continuous cropping ↳ Increased cropping intensity (>100%) in Punjab.
(6) Subsidised electricity makes farmers to ensure effective irrigation, enhances crop diversity
(7) Reduction of export tax & providing export subsidies helps in influencing the cropping pattern.
Close · a way forward
