Indian ocean holds significant position in securing various interests of not just India but many oth almost all the countries of the world.
For India, Indian ocean holds significance from point of view of:
Body · points
Energy security-
Economoc development (trade & investments)
Natural resources-
Defence of sovereignty.
Geostrategic interests. Thus, India wants to see Indian Ocean as the 'zone of Peace'.
Importance of Maldives for securing above interests:
• Maldives is the first point of contact for our energy security (oil & gas contai-ners pass through this region). • Maldives can be used by hostile countries like China and Pakistan to plan hostility towards India. • Our exploration of minerals in Indian ocean depends on access through Maldives to the central Indian ocean.
In recent times, deteriorating Indo-Maldives relations thus, present serious implications for India.
India's intervention can be modified by:
- Adhering to the principle of being the security provider in the region and non-interference in the domestic affairs of the country.
- Strengthen trade and investment partnership.
- Soft-power approach- provide aid and use diplomacy to keep Maldives a good neighbour.
• The relationship with Maldives is importance in light of India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy'. Any instability in neighbourhood will have serious repercussions on our security → need a cautious approach
