GS3 Infrastructure, railways and freightPrelims and Mains

In the news since 25 June 2026

Why in news
On 25 June 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed wagon reforms and directed that a new Wagon Design Policy be finalised within 15 days. It will let industries propose commodity-specific wagon designs.
What it is
The Wagon Design Policy sets the rules under which freight wagon designs are proposed, approved and tested for use on Indian Railways. The proposed reform opens design to industries, so wagons can match the handling needs of particular commodities. The aim is to win more freight from road and cut logistics costs.
Who designs
Industries will be allowed to design wagons to their own requirements and propose design changes.
Safety responsibility
RDSO and the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) will be responsible for wagon safety.
Existing specialised wagons
Recently developed specialised wagons for cement and salt are cited as proof that commodity-specific designs work.
Green claim
The release says rail is about 90 percent more environmentally friendly than road transport.
RDSO
RDSO is the Research Designs and Standards Organisation, the research and standards body of Indian Railways, based in Lucknow.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Policy still to be issued within 15 days; few firm facts yet.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
