- Why in news
- On 31 July 2026, the Rural Development Ministry told Rajya Sabha that the VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 has been in force since 1 July 2026, with 125 days of guaranteed work and a 60:40 or 90:10 Centre-State fund split.
- What it is
- The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 is a statutory framework for guaranteed rural wage employment and livelihood support. It gives rural households whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work a legal right to work. It stresses asset creation, convergence with other programmes and technology-based monitoring.
- Commencement
- The Act came into force on 1 July 2026.
- Guaranteed days
- Guaranteed employment rises from 100 to 125 days a financial year per rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.
- Fund sharing
- Under section 22(2), the Centre and States share costs 90:10 for North Eastern and Himalayan States and J&K, and 60:40 for other States and UTs with legislature.
- Worker rights
- The Act expressly provides unemployment allowance if work is not given in time and compensation for delayed wages.
- Wage payment
- Wages are paid through the DBT-SPARSH platform directly into workers' bank accounts.
Don’t confuse with VB-G RAM G vs MGNREGA: MGNREGA guaranteed 100 days; VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 guarantees 125 days with a changed Centre-State funding pattern.
Don’t confuse with Central share vs total outlay: ₹95,692.31 crore is the Central share; the total with State share is over ₹1.51 lakh crore.
Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
Why it matters
- Strengthens the statutory right to work and raises rural livelihood security with 125 days of work.
- Links work to durable assets such as water works, rural infrastructure and climate-resilience works.
Problems
- The 60:40 cost split raises the fiscal burden on most States, which may limit demand-based work.
- Delays in wage payment and weak last-mile capacity can undermine the guarantee.
Way forward
- Ensure timely Central fund release and wage payment, with compensation enforced.
- Strengthen Gram Panchayats, social audits and grievance redressal with capacity building.
