- Why in news
- On 7 August 2026, the Railways Minister told the Rajya Sabha that the 272-km USBRL gives all-weather rail connectivity to Kashmir. Farmers and small firms now reach national markets, and new surveys and cargo terminals have been sanctioned in J&K.
- What it is
- The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link is a 272-km line that joins the Kashmir valley to the Indian Railways network. It runs through the young Himalayas and is among the hardest rail projects built since independence. It includes the Chenab bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge.
- Chenab Bridge
- It is the world's highest railway bridge, in Reasi district. It is 1315 m long, with an arch span of 467 m and a height of 359 m above the river bed.
- Travel time
- After commissioning, the Katra-Srinagar journey takes about 3 hours.
- Electrification
- The whole line is electrified, and all of J&K's existing broad-gauge network is electrified.
Don’t confuse with Chenab Bridge vs Anji Khad Bridge: Chenab is a steel arch bridge, the world's highest rail bridge. Anji Khad is the cable-stayed bridge, the first on Indian Railways. Both are on the USBRL.
Don’t confuse with USBRL vs Jammu-Poonch line: USBRL is built and running (272 km). The 190-km Jammu/Reasi-Poonch line is only a sanctioned survey.
Places in the news: 26 Prelims questions since 2013, rising (12% of news questions in 2022–26); they test location and why it matters.
Why it matters
- All-weather rail link integrates the Kashmir valley with national markets and supports tourism.
- Apple, dry fruit, pashmina and handicraft producers and small firms gain wider market access.
Problems
- Young Himalayan geology makes construction and maintenance hard.
- Station upgrades face brownfield problems such as utility shifting, statutory clearances and work near tracks.
Way forward
- Complete the Kavach works sanctioned on about 401 route km in J&K.
- Speed up cargo terminals and new-line approvals so that the valley's freight potential is used.
Put in your answer
Engineering feat: Chenab Bridge, 359 m above river bed, shows how difficult terrain can be overcome for strategic connectivity.
Market access: The rail link lets Kashmir's apples, dry fruits, pashmina and handicrafts reach markets beyond the region.
Local road benefit: About 215 km of roads built with the project serve local people.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Place and infrastructure topic with standing facts (272 km, Chenab Bridge); places rarely reach Mains, and Prelims facts are background only.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
