Why it matters
- Gives free, confidential help to rural and remote people where specialists are scarce.
- Lowers stigma by letting people seek help by phone, and links callers to referral care.
- Gives free, confidential mental health support to remote and underserved people, reducing the treatment gap.
- Languages, app, video and a no-screen phone line widen access, including for visually challenged people.
Problems
- Shortage of trained mental health professionals and uneven language coverage.
- Stigma and low awareness limit use; men and women callers differ in access.
- Few trained mental health professionals, and language and connectivity gaps, limit reach.
- Callers may not get specialist follow-up or in-person care after the first call.
Way forward
- Strengthen links between Tele-MANAS, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and district programmes for follow-up care.
- Sustain community awareness through MANN Jaagriti and expand trained counsellors.
- Strengthen links between Tele-MANAS cells and district-level mental health services for referral.
- Add trained counsellors and more languages, and use the WHO assessment to fix gaps.
