- Why in news
- On 11 May 2026, ICMR and ICAR jointly launched SEHAT, a mission-mode programme linking agriculture, nutrition and health. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan unveiled it.
- What it is
- SEHAT (Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation) is a joint research mission of ICMR (health ministry) and ICAR (agriculture ministry). It aims to turn agricultural research into measurable nutrition and public health results. It works through five priority areas, from biofortified crops to One Health preparedness.
- Full form
- SEHAT stands for Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation. It is a national mission-mode programme.
- Implementing bodies
- ICMR works under the Department of Health Research, and ICAR under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE). Both are led by their Director Generals.
- Five priority areas
- Biofortified and nutrient-dense crops; integrated farming systems; occupational health of agricultural workers; agriculture-enabled prevention of NCDs through functional foods; and One Health preparedness through integrated surveillance.
- Division of roles
- ICAR is to ensure nutritious food systems are available. ICMR is to validate these interventions with scientific evidence.
- Problem addressed
- India faces a dual burden: persistent malnutrition alongside rising non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer.
Don’t confuse with ICMR vs ICAR: ICMR is the apex body for biomedical research under the health ministry. ICAR is the apex body for agricultural research and education under the agriculture ministry.
Don’t confuse with Biofortification vs fortification: Biofortification raises nutrient content in the crop itself through breeding. Fortification adds nutrients to food during processing.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Links farm production with nutrition goals, which addresses the dual burden of malnutrition and NCDs.
- Supports a preventive health approach and One Health preparedness through joint surveillance.
- Builds an evidence base to guide policy on biofortified and functional foods.
Problems
- Coordination between two ministries and councils with different mandates.
- Moving research findings into farmer adoption and consumer diets at scale.
Way forward
- Set clear outcome indicators and publish data to ensure accountability.
- Link findings to existing programmes such as PDS, POSHAN and Mid-Day Meal for scale.
Put in your answer
Dual burden of disease: Use the dual burden of malnutrition and NCDs to argue why agriculture policy needs a nutrition lens.
Nutrition-sensitive food systems: Integrating agriculture, nutrition and health research can improve dietary diversity, address nutrient deficiencies and support disease prevention.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: New mission-mode programme linking agriculture, nutrition and health; worth a card, but few detailed facts yet. Schemes are 16% of Prelims questions.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
