- Why in news
- On 14 April 2026, PIB published a explainer on Mission Poshan 2.0 as POSHAN Abhiyaan completes eight years. The 8th Poshan Pakhwada is running from 9 to 23 April 2026.
- What it is
- POSHAN Abhiyaan is India's National Nutrition Mission, run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development with many ministries converging. It targets stunting, wasting, anaemia and underweight through a lifecycle approach. Since Budget 2021-22 it is part of Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
- Launch and full form
- Launched on 8 March 2018 as the Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment, a multi-ministerial mission.
- Nodal ministry and convergence
- Anchored in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, it brings together more than 26 ministries and departments.
- Mission Poshan 2.0
- Budget 2021-22 merged Anganwadi Services, the Scheme for Adolescent Girls and POSHAN Abhiyaan into Mission Poshan 2.0.
- Poshan Maah and Pakhwada
- Poshan Maah is held every September; Poshan Pakhwada is a two-week April campaign, with its 8th edition on 9-23 April 2026.
Don’t confuse with POSHAN Abhiyaan vs Mission Poshan 2.0: POSHAN Abhiyaan (2018) is the original mission; Mission Poshan 2.0 (2021-22) is the umbrella that subsumed it with Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls.
Don’t confuse with Navchetana vs Aadharshila: Navchetana is the framework for early stimulation of children up to 3 years; Aadharshila is the ECCE curriculum for ages 3 to 6.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Treats nutrition as human capital and SDG goal, using a lifecycle approach with focus on the first 1,000 days.
- Convergence across ministries and real-time digital monitoring improve last-mile delivery.
Problems
- Malnutrition needs action beyond nutrition schemes: sanitation, water, education and incomes.
- Data-based monitoring depends on Anganwadi worker capacity, Aadhaar and facial recognition, which can exclude genuine beneficiaries.
Way forward
- Keep training Anganwadi workers and upgrading centres, including co-location in primary schools.
- Strengthen community-based management of malnutrition and convergence with health services.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Flagship nutrition mission explainer. Schemes are 52 of 327 Prelims questions, but this is background rather than fresh news, so a card only.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
