  1. 1.To create awareness relating to malnutrition among pregnant women and lactating mothers.
  2. 2.To reduce the incidence of anaemia among young children, adolescent girls and women.
  3. 3.To promote the consumption of millets, coarse cereals and unpolished rice.
  4. 4.To promote the consumption of poultry eggs.

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 and 2 only
b1, 2 and 3 only
c1, 2 and 4 only
d3 and 4 only

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

The National Nutrition Mission aimed to cut stunting, undernutrition, anaemia and low birth weight, with a focus on young children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers, and it relies on awareness campaigns. So Statements 1 and 2 are objectives. Promoting millets, coarse cereals or unpolished rice, and promoting poultry eggs, are not among its stated objectives. Remember: awareness plus anaemia reduction were named objectives; particular foods were not.

  • 1. Awareness on malnutrition among pregnant and lactating women is an aim.
  • 2. Reducing anaemia in children, adolescent girls and women is an aim.
  • 3. Promoting millets and unpolished rice is not a stated objective.
  • 4. Promoting eggs is not a stated objective.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Promoting millets and unpolished rice is not a stated objective.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 4 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 4.

What you needed to know: Promoting eggs is not a stated objective.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: awareness among mothers and reducing anaemia are the mission's objectives.
  • (b) Wrong: promoting millets and coarse cereals is not a stated objective.
  • (c) Wrong: promoting poultry eggs is not a stated objective.
  • (d) Wrong: neither food-promotion statement is a stated objective, and it leaves out the real ones.

Worth knowing: The mission was launched as POSHAN Abhiyaan in March 2018 and later folded into Mission Poshan 2.0; the answer follows the objectives as announced in 2017.
