- Why in news
- The 7th High-Level Meeting of the OPEC-India Energy Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 22 September 2026. It was co-chaired by Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais.
- What it is
- The OPEC-India Energy Dialogue is a standing forum between India, a major oil consumer, and OPEC, the group of oil-producing countries. It brings producers and a large consumer together to discuss market stability, investment and energy security. It works through high-level meetings and technical-level cooperation.
- Co-chairs
- The meeting was co-chaired by India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister and the OPEC Secretary General.
- Launch
- The dialogue was launched in New Delhi in 2015, so it is eleven years old.
- Agenda
- Talks covered oil market stability, energy security and timely investment across the oil industry.
- Next meeting
- The 8th High-Level Meeting will be held in Vienna, Austria, on a date yet to be fixed.
- OPEC headquarters
- OPEC's secretariat is based in Vienna, Austria.
Don’t confuse with OPEC vs OPEC+: OPEC is the organisation of oil-exporting member countries. OPEC+ adds non-OPEC producers such as Russia for coordinating output. The dialogue is with OPEC.
Don’t confuse with OPEC vs IEA: OPEC represents producers. The International Energy Agency (IEA) mainly represents energy consumers, and India is an association country of the IEA, not a full member.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- India is a major importer of crude oil, so a dialogue with producers helps it seek stable and predictable supplies and prices.
- It gives India a voice in discussions on market stability and investment, and supports its energy security.
Problems
- Oil price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty affect India's import bill and inflation.
- Producer and consumer interests differ: OPEC output decisions can raise prices that hurt India.
Way forward
- Keep regular producer-consumer dialogue and build on technical-level cooperation.
- Diversify import sources and the energy mix while continuing engagement with producers.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: OPEC is a Prelims-relevant body (international bodies 61 of 327), but this dialogue meeting adds no new decision or fact to test.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
