- Why in news
- On 13 July 2026, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment released an impact evaluation of NSFDC's credit-based schemes. It found gains in income, assets, self-employment and social status among SC beneficiaries.
- What it is
- NSFDC is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It gives concessional loans to eligible Scheduled Caste persons for income-generating activities and self-employment. It also supports skill and livelihood efforts for the community.
- Status and parent ministry
- NSFDC is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- Who evaluated it
- An external agency, DOORS, did the impact study in FY 2025-26 on a sample basis.
- Loan use and assets
- 93.34% used the aid for the intended purpose and 93.54% still hold the assets created.
- Self-employment
- Self-employed beneficiaries rose from 46.62% to 73.95% after assistance.
- Women
- Of 705 homemakers, 674 (95.60%) became self-employed.
- Record disbursement
- NSFDC disbursed ₹775.26 crore in FY 2025–26, up 27% on the previous year and its highest ever.
- VISVAS Yojana
- This interest subvention scheme saw ₹26.09 crore disbursed to 98,748 individuals.
- SEED Scheme
- ₹11.18 crore went to 1,450 Self Help Groups across four States.

Don’t confuse with NSFDC vs NSKFDC: NSFDC serves Scheduled Caste persons. The National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC) serves safai karamcharis and scavengers.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Concessional credit supports SC entrepreneurship and moves families out of low-income brackets.
- Asset retention and loan-use rates suggest the loans are productive and well monitored.
- Concessional credit supports self-employment and enterprise among Scheduled Castes, who often lack access to formal credit.
- Higher women participation advances inclusive, gender-responsive development.
Problems
- Findings come from a sample in eleven States and may not represent the whole country.
- The study is a government-commissioned evaluation, so independent verification and long-term tracking of outcomes matter.
- Reaching the poorest borrowers depends on channel partners such as banks, whose coverage and willingness to lend vary.
- Loans alone may not lift borrowers without skills, market linkages and repayment support.
Way forward
- Widen outreach to more States and to remote areas.
- Pair credit with skill training, market linkage and regular independent evaluation.
- Expand partner networks, including small finance banks, and track repayment and income outcomes.
- Link credit with skilling and market access, and use digital loan systems to improve transparency.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Welfare corporation with impact evaluation; schemes are asked often (52 of 327 Prelims) but this one has few testable facts.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
