- Why in news
- On 16 October 2026, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued operational guidelines for the revised Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations, continued for 2026-27 to 2030-31 with an outlay of ₹7,386.74 crore.
- What it is
- The Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It funds federations to prepare athletes for the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Paralympics and World Championships. It covers coaching camps, athlete support, foreign exposure, national championships and federation governance.
- Period and outlay
- The scheme continues for 2026-27 to 2030-31, the 16th Finance Commission cycle, with a total outlay of ₹7,386.74 crore.
- Olympic Training Centres
- Single-sport centres with modern sports science facilities are planned, to reduce reliance on overseas training.
- National Games support
- Assistance of up to Rs 50 crore is provided for conducting National Games, covering equipment, Timing, Scoring and Result services, technical officials' remuneration and technical conduct.
- Indigenous sports outreach
- Support to NSFs of indigenous games to seek demonstration-event status in global competitions and set up federations abroad.
- Multilateral and Global South cooperation
- Funding is provided for sports events and meetings organised for bodies such as BRICS and BIMSTEC.
Don’t confuse with NSF scheme vs Khelo India: The NSF scheme funds federations for elite preparation and events. Khelo India is a separate scheme for grassroots talent and sports infrastructure.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Supports India's preparation for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic bid.
- Olympic Training Centres can cut reliance on foreign training and build sports diplomacy with the Global South.
Problems
- Federations' governance and transparency vary, which affects how well funds are used.
- Funding must be linked to measurable outcomes for athletes.
Way forward
- Tie assistance to performance and governance audits.
- Build the Olympic Training Centres quickly with qualified coaches and sports scientists.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Scheme continued for 2026-27 to 2030-31 with Rs 7,386.74 crore outlay. Schemes are 16% of Prelims, but sports schemes are rarely asked.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
