- Why in news
- On 5 February 2026, the Ministry of Science & Technology gave Parliament an update on NM-ICPS, covering 25 hubs, four TTRPs, technology outcomes and the BharatGen AI models.
- What it is
- NM-ICPS is a mission of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to build India's capability in cyber-physical systems such as AI, IoT, robotics, cybersecurity and quantum technologies. It works through Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) set up in academic institutions. Each hub works on technology development, skill building, start-ups and international collaboration.
- Outlay and period
- NM-ICPS is run by DST with a total outlay of ₹3,660 crore for 2018–2027.
- Hubs
- 25 TIHs have been set up in premier academic institutions.
- TTRPs
- Four TIHs were upgraded to Technology Translation Research Parks: IIT Kanpur (cybersecurity), IISc Bangalore (robotics and AI systems), ISM Dhanbad (mining technologies) and IIT Indore (digital healthcare).
- Four activity categories
- Every TIH works on technology development, HRD and skill development, innovation, entrepreneurship and start-ups, and international collaborations.
- BharatGen
- BharatGen aims to build sovereign foundational AI models for Indian languages. Its text model Param has 7 billion parameters.
- Patram
- Patram is described as India's first Vision-Language Model for Documents, with 7 billion parameters.
Don’t confuse with TIH vs TTRP: A TIH is the basic hub in an academic institution. A TTRP is an upgraded hub meant to scale translational research, commercialisation and industry engagement.
Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.
Why it matters
- Builds domestic capability in AI, IoT, robotics, cybersecurity and quantum technologies.
- Sovereign AI models in Indian languages widen access in healthcare, agriculture, education and governance.
Problems
- Moving pilot technologies to scalable deployment needs strong industry and government partners.
- The mission period ends in 2027, so sustained funding and hub continuity must be planned.
Way forward
- Strengthen industry and government partnerships and scale validated technologies.
- Use TTRPs to speed up commercialisation, and add more languages and modalities to BharatGen.
