Why in news
The Union Cabinet approved an extra Rs. 30,000 crore commitment to NIIF, announced on 29 June 2026. This raises the Government of India's total commitment to NIIF to Rs. 60,000 crore.
What it is
The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) is a sovereign-anchored fund set up to draw long-term institutional capital into Indian infrastructure and other national priority sectors. It was announced in the Union Budget 2015-16 and is run by a professional manager, NIIF Limited. It invests through several funds, and also advises government bodies on PPP structures.
Government stake
The Government of India holds 49% of NIIF Limited, so it is anchored by the state but not government-controlled.
Use of new money
The money will set up NIIF Infrastructure Fund II, with a target corpus of close to Rs. 30,000 crore. It will succeed the first flagship infrastructure fund.
First infrastructure fund
The first infrastructure fund has a corpus of Rs. 16,000 crore and is India's largest domestic infrastructure fund.
India-Japan Fund
The India-Japan Fund is NIIF's first bilateral fund. It focuses on climate, circular economy and energy transition.
Advisory role
NIIF advises central and state bodies on PPP initiatives, including structuring the Maritime Development Fund and the Research Development and Innovation Fund.

Don’t confuse with NIIF vs National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP): NIIF is a fund that invests capital. The NIP is a list of projects planned across sectors.

Don’t confuse with NIIF vs National Monetisation Pipeline: NIIF brings in new investment through funds. The Monetisation Pipeline leases out existing public assets to raise money.
