NHAI Predictive Asset Management

GS3 InfrastructurePrelims and Mains

In the news since 16 June 2026

Why in news
On 16 June 2026, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said NHAI is shifting National Highway operations and maintenance to predictive asset management, built on three pillars.
What it is
NHAI is the authority that develops, maintains and manages National Highways in India. Predictive asset management uses condition data and analytics to spot road deterioration early and repair it before failure. It replaces fixed-schedule or reactive repair.
Three pillars
Large-scale asset condition monitoring, a centralized asset intelligence ecosystem, and predictive monitoring with risk-based decisions.
Network Survey Vehicles
NSVs collect pavement data such as roughness, rutting, cracking and structural distress across highways under O&M.
Drone Analytics Monitoring Systems
DAMS build digital inventories of highway assets, monitor structures and identify encroachments.
AI dashcam analytics
Dashcam Analytics Services are being rolled out to automatically detect potholes, damaged crash barriers, faulty lighting and drainage issues.
Single data source
Data from NSVs, drones, dashcams and FWD surveys is being merged into one ecosystem giving a single view of asset condition.

Don’t confuse with Predictive vs preventive maintenance: Preventive maintenance is done on a fixed schedule; predictive maintenance is triggered by condition data showing likely failure.

Don’t confuse with NHAI vs MoRTH: MoRTH is the ministry that sets policy; NHAI is the statutory authority that builds and maintains National Highways.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting infrastructure topic with monitoring tools, but few testable facts and no clear debate for a question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
