- Why in news
- On 23 September 2026 the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment released a beneficiary story. It shows how the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) helped Sagar Kodi finish his Ph.D.
- What it is
- The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) is a central scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. It gives financial support for M.Phil and Ph.D. study to SC students who may not get other national fellowships. It is a Junior and Senior Research Fellowship, run through the UGC.
- Implementing ministry
- The scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The UGC acts as the implementing agency.
- Target group
- It supports Scheduled Caste students doing higher research degrees (M.Phil and Ph.D.).
- Two stages of support
- The scholar in the story received both the Junior Research Fellowship and the Senior Research Fellowship under NFSC.
- Link with UGC-NET
- The beneficiary had narrowly missed the qualifying mark for the UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship before getting NFSC support.
- Outcome
- The beneficiary now works as a Research Associate at the Anthropological Survey of India, Mysore.
Don’t confuse with NFSC vs UGC-NET JRF: UGC-NET JRF is a general merit-based fellowship open to all qualifying candidates. NFSC is a targeted scheme for SC students.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Targeted fellowships reduce financial barriers for SC students in higher research.
- They raise SC representation in academia and research institutions.
Problems
- Delays in releasing fellowship money can disrupt research.
- Awareness and access are weaker for first-generation learners in rural areas.
Way forward
- Release funds on time, ideally through direct benefit transfer.
- Add mentoring and outreach support for first-generation SC researchers.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Scheme is on the syllabus. The release is a beneficiary story with no scheme features to test, so no question.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
