Why in news
The 42nd meeting of the National Capital Region Planning Board on 16 June 2026 in New Delhi kept the NCR's area unchanged and backed four 'Namo Cities' under Regional Plan-2041.
What it is
The National Capital Region Planning Board is a statutory body set up under the NCR Planning Board Act, 1985. It prepares the Regional Plan for the NCR, coordinates plans of the participating states and funds projects that help carry out the plan. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister chairs it.
Extent of NCR
The NCR covers 55,083 sq km across NCT of Delhi and 27 districts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Namo Cities
Four semi-greenfield mixed-use TOD cities are proposed at stations on the Namo Bharat (RRTS) lines, chosen by competition among states.
Incentive for Namo Cities
The scheme has a performance-linked incentive of ₹5,000 crore, including a ₹1,000 crore grant.
Legal basis
NCRPB was constituted under the National Capital Region Planning Board Act, 1985.
Population projection
NCR population is projected to rise from 7.86 crore to 14.73 crore by 2041.

Don’t confuse with NCRPB vs NCR Regional Plan: The Board is the statutory body; the Regional Plan-2041 is the plan it prepares, and it is yet to be notified.

Don’t confuse with Namo Bharat vs Namo Cities: Namo Bharat is the RRTS rail service; Namo Cities are proposed TOD cities near its stations.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
