- Why in news
- On 3 February 2026 the Textiles Ministry told the Lok Sabha about progress under the National Technical Textiles Mission, including projects approved in Karnataka.
- What it is
- The National Technical Textiles Mission is a Ministry of Textiles scheme for technical textiles, which are fabrics made for function rather than looks. It supports research, indigenous machinery, skilling, awareness and exports. It aims to raise India's share in the global technical textiles market.
- Launch and outlay
- NTTM was launched in 2020 with an outlay of Rs 1,480 crore.
- Objectives
- It promotes research and innovation in specialty fibres and technical textiles, indigenous machinery, user awareness, exports and a skilled workforce.
- Skilling
- 24 skilling courses have been developed and over 1,000 persons trained.
- Internships
- 21 agencies are empanelled to run internships for undergraduate students.
- Reach
- NTTM is a Pan India Mission, implemented across the country.
Don’t confuse with NTTM vs PLI for textiles: NTTM supports research, skilling and machinery for technical textiles. The PLI scheme for textiles gives production-linked incentives for MMF apparel, fabrics and technical textiles.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Builds domestic capacity in high-value technical textiles used in defence, space, railways and health, reducing import dependence.
Problems
- Limited industry awareness and a skills gap in a technology-intensive sector.
Way forward
- Link research projects to industry users and scale up skilling and start-up support.
