Why in news
On 25 February 2026, PIB reported a decade of scientific river ranching by ICAR-CIFRI under the Namami Gange Programme. It cites 205.5 lakh indigenous fish seeds released through 169 programmes between 2017 and 2025.
What it is
River ranching is the release of hatchery-bred fish seed into a river to rebuild depleted native stocks. Under Namami Gange, ICAR-CIFRI breeds seed from wild Ganga brooders so that native genetic lines are kept. The aim is to restore ecological balance and support fishing livelihoods, not only to add fish.
Seed source
Seed was bred artificially from wild brooders collected from the Ganga, to protect native genetic lines.
Species covered
Indian Major Carps, Mahseer, native catfishes, Chitala and freshwater scampi.
Inland capture fish output
India is the world's top producer of inland capture fish at 1.89 million tonnes, ahead of China.
ICAR-CIFRI
Established in March 1947 at Barrackpore, West Bengal; it is an ICAR institute for inland fisheries research.

Don’t confuse with River ranching vs cage culture: Ranching releases seed into open river waters to rebuild wild stocks. Cage culture grows fish in enclosures for production and profit.

Don’t confuse with ICAR-CIFRI vs NMCG: CIFRI is the ICAR research institute that carried out the ranching. NMCG is the body that runs Namami Gange.

Environment: Prelims tests bodies, programmes and the law behind them; Mains asks why plans fall short.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting conservation topic with numbers, but river ranching is a narrow topic; UPSC has not asked it as a news item in the counts given.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
