- Why in news
- On 2 June 2026, Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Assam's Chief Minister launched Mission Senehjori, a cluster-based programme to build a premium, traceable Muga silk value chain in Assam.
- What it is
- Mission Senehjori is a three-year, cluster-based programme led by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region with the Assam government, Central Silk Board and Textiles Ministry. It covers the Muga value chain from host plants and seed to reeling, weaving, GI authentication, branding, exports and tourism. It runs under one brand identity, "Senehjori".
- Lead agency
- Anchored by MDoNER, in convergence with the Assam government, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles and other bodies.
- Outlay
- Estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore over three years, of which ₹136–151 crore is from MDoNER.
- Muga silk
- Called the world's only naturally golden silk and India's first GI-tagged silk; supports about 2.6 lakh rearer and weaver families.
- Approach and districts
- Cluster-based, covering Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli and Sualkuchi, with FPOs and Common Facility Centres.
- Targets by 2028
- Five modern reeling units and a Muga Spun Mill, 30 FPOs, 5,000 ha of Som and Soalu host plants regenerated, over 80% of traded Muga GI-authenticated, exports above 2,000 kg a year.
Don’t confuse with Muga vs other silks: Muga (golden, Assam) is distinct from mulberry, Eri and Tasar silk. Muga feeds on Som and Soalu plants.
Don’t confuse with MDoNER vs Ministry of Textiles: The Mission is led by MDoNER; the Central Silk Board under the Ministry of Textiles is a partner.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Raises incomes of about 2.6 lakh rearer and weaver families by capturing more of the value chain.
- Builds a GI-backed premium brand and adds silk tourism to the Northeast's cultural economy.
Problems
- Producers earn very little (₹18,000–21,000 a year), so the sector is under-monetised.
- Fake or mixed silk can dilute the GI brand, so authentication needs strict enforcement.
Way forward
- Strengthen host-plant regeneration, seed security and modern reeling, and organise producers through FPOs.
- Enforce GI authentication and digital traceability so premium prices reach rearers and weavers.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: New cluster-based mission by MDoNER for Muga silk, India's first GI-tagged silk; worth a card but facts are thin for a question.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
