- Why in news
- On 22 January 2026, CDS General Anil Chauhan released the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework, a policy and roadmap to bring quantum technologies into the Armed Forces.
- What it is
- The Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework is a vision document for the Tri-Services. It sets a policy and an indicative roadmap to adopt quantum technologies in defence, in line with the National Quantum Mission. Quantum technologies use properties such as superposition and entanglement for communication, computing and sensing.
- Released by
- Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan released the framework on 22 January 2026.
- Four pillars
- The framework covers quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices.
- Link to national mission
- It is aligned with the National Quantum Mission, of which the Defence Forces are an integral part.
- Civil-military fusion
- Milestones are to be met through civil-military fusion, using governing bodies with members from several government sectors.
- Jointness
- The framework stresses jointness and integration across the three services.
Don’t confuse with Quantum communication vs quantum computing: Communication covers secure key exchange and links (e.g. quantum key distribution); computing uses qubits to solve certain problems faster. Sensing measures physical quantities very precisely.
Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.
Why it matters
- Quantum sensing and secure communication can improve navigation, detection and encryption for the forces.
- A common tri-service roadmap supports jointness and avoids duplicated effort.
Problems
- Quantum hardware and materials are costly and depend on imports and a small talent pool.
- Hard to coordinate civil, academic, industry and military work.
Way forward
- Fund indigenous research with industry and academia under the National Quantum Mission.
- Set milestones, test beds and trained manpower for each service.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting topic tied to the National Quantum Mission, with four named pillars. Science and tech is 17% of Prelims, but a framework document gives few testable facts.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
