- Why in news
- On 23 September 2026, the Ministry of Railways announced that KAVACH Version 4.0 was commissioned for the first time, on 108 route km of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section of South Central Railway.
- What it is
- KAVACH is India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system for Indian Railways. It helps the loco pilot keep to speed limits and applies brakes automatically if the pilot fails to act. It works through trackside RFID tags, station units, towers and on-board units in locomotives.
- Where 4.0 was commissioned
- First commissioning of Version 4.0 is on 108 route km of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section, Hyderabad Division, South Central Railway.
- New features in 4.0
- Better location accuracy, better signal aspect information in bigger yards, station-to-station OFC interface, and direct interface with Electronic Interlocking.
- Safety certification
- KAVACH needs the highest safety certification, SIL-4.
- What it does
- It helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), controls speed and automatically applies brakes if the Loco Pilot fails to do so.
- Components
- Station KAVACH, RFID tags on track, telecom towers, optical fibre cable along track, and Loco KAVACH on locomotives.
- Earlier version on SCR
- Version 3.2 had been deployed over 1,465 route km on South Central Railway.
Don’t confuse with SPAD vs collision: SPAD means a train passing a red signal without authority. It is a main cause of collisions but is not itself a collision.
Don’t confuse with ATP vs Electronic Interlocking: ATP (KAVACH) supervises train speed and braking. Electronic Interlocking controls signals and points to set safe routes.

Why it matters
- Automatic braking and speed supervision reduce human-error accidents and collisions.
- Indigenous technology cuts import dependence in railway safety.
Problems
- Deployment needs towers, RFID tags and OFC along very long routes, which is costly and slow.
- The system needs SIL-4 certification, and upgrades must work with existing signalling.
Way forward
- Speed up large-scale rollout on high-density routes using the experience from 3.2 deployment.
- Keep upgrading versions so they work with diverse yards and existing interlocking.

Consider the following statements about KAVACH, the Automatic Train Protection system of Indian Railways: 1. It can apply brakes automatically if the Loco Pilot fails to act. 2. It needs safety certification at Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4). 3. It works only through equipment fitted in locomotives, with no trackside installations. 4. Version 4.0 uses satellite links instead of Optical Fibre Cable for the station-to-station interface. Which of the statements given above are correct?
Which of the statements given above are correct?

Statements the way Prelims prints them. Say first, then see the fact.
1.KAVACH is an Automatic Train Protection system that can apply brakes automatically if the Loco Pilot fails to do so.
True. KAVACH can automatically apply brakes when the Loco Pilot fails to act.
2.KAVACH requires safety certification at Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4).
True. SIL-4 is the highest safety integrity level and KAVACH needs it.
3.KAVACH Version 4.0 was first commissioned on 108 route km of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section of South Central Railway.
True. The first commissioning of 4.0 was on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section, Hyderabad Division.
4.KAVACH works without any trackside installations, relying only on equipment fitted in locomotives.
False. It also needs Station KAVACH, RFID tags along the track, telecom towers and optical fibre cable.
5.KAVACH is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD).
True. Preventing SPAD is a stated design aim of KAVACH.
