- Why in news
- On 7 May 2026 the Union Health Ministry launched JANANI, a digital platform for maternal and child health records, at a national summit on best practices.
- Full form
- JANANI stands for Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care.
- Origin
- It is an upgraded version of the existing RCH portal and builds a longitudinal health record.
- MCH card
- It introduces QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health cards, with automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies.
- Interoperability
- It can integrate with national platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN.
- Registration IDs
- Beneficiaries can register using ABHA, Aadhaar (OTP and biometric) or mobile number, with pan-India search.
- Progress
- So far 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations and over 30 lakh pregnant women registrations.
Don’t confuse with JANANI vs Janani Suraksha Yojana: JANANI is a digital tracking platform. Janani Suraksha Yojana is a cash-incentive scheme for institutional delivery under the National Health Mission.
Don’t confuse with U-WIN vs POSHAN: U-WIN is the digital platform for immunisation records. POSHAN is the nutrition tracking platform.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Gives a portable, lifelong health record, so care continues for migrant women.
- Alerts for high-risk pregnancies and real-time dashboards allow timely action and better accountability.
Problems
- Digital access and literacy are uneven among poor and rural women.
- Data privacy and Aadhaar-linked authentication raise exclusion and security concerns.
Way forward
- Train frontline workers such as ASHAs and ANMs and keep an offline option.
- Put strong data protection safeguards in place and keep services open without mandatory biometrics.
