Question 51: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements in relation to Janani Suraksha Yojana :

  1. 1.It is a safe motherhood intervention of the State Health Departments.
  2. 2.Its objective is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality among poor pregnant women.
  3. 3.It aims to promote institutional delivery among poor pregnant women.
  4. 4.Its objective includes providing public health facilities to sick infants up to one year of age.

How many of the statements given above are correct?

aOnly one
bOnly two
cOnly three
dAll four

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Statements 2 and 3 are correct. Janani Suraksha Yojana is a safe-motherhood intervention under the National Health Mission, a centrally sponsored scheme, aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among poor pregnant women through cash incentives. It is therefore not an intervention of State Health Departments alone, so statement 1 fails. Care of sick infants is covered by the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram, not JSY.

  • 1. JSY is a centrally sponsored scheme under the National Health Mission, not a State Health Departments' intervention.
  • 2. Its objective is to cut maternal and neonatal mortality among poor women.
  • 3. It promotes institutional delivery.
  • 4. Care for sick infants falls under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram.

How you could have got this

No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Only one undercounts; statements 2 and 3 are both true.
  • (b) Correct: statements 2 and 3 hold.
  • (c) Three would need statement 1 or 4 to hold; neither does.
  • (d) Statement 4 describes a different scheme, so not all four.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
