- Why in news
- UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made an official visit to India on 19 January 2026. A joint statement set a target of US$ 200 billion in bilateral trade by 2032 and signed a Letter of Intent on a Strategic Defence Partnership.
- What it is
- The India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is the framework for ties between the two countries across trade, investment, energy, defence, technology and people-to-people links. It is backed by the CEPA signed in 2022 and by regular dialogues such as the Joint Commission Meeting and the Strategic Dialogue. The UAE is among India's largest trade partners and a key source of energy and investment.
- Defence
- A Letter of Intent was signed towards a Strategic Defence Partnership. Defence and security cooperation is called a core pillar of the partnership.
- Energy
- HPCL and ADNOC Gas signed a 10-year LNG supply agreement for 0.5 million tonnes per year from 2028. The leaders also welcomed India's SHANTI law as opening civil nuclear cooperation.
- Multilateral support
- The UAE backed India's BRICS Chairmanship in 2026. India backed the 2026 UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE.
- IMEC
- The leaders recalled the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor on the margins of the G20 summit in Delhi in September 2023.
Don’t confuse with CEPA vs BIT: CEPA (2022) covers trade in goods, services and related areas. The Bilateral Investment Treaty (2024) covers protection and flow of investment.
Don’t confuse with Strategic Dialogue vs Joint Commission: Both are standing India-UAE mechanisms. The 5th Strategic Dialogue and 16th Joint Commission Meeting were both held in December 2025.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- The UAE is a major source of energy, investment and trade, and a key gateway to West Asia and Africa.
- Defence, space, AI and nuclear cooperation move ties beyond trade and energy.
Problems
- Reaching the US$ 200 billion target needs steady growth and more MSME participation.
- Regional instability in West Asia can affect energy supply and shipping routes such as IMEC.
Way forward
- Speed up delivery of Bharat Mart, the Virtual Trade Corridor and the Dholera Special Investment Region partnership.
- Turn the defence Letter of Intent into a concluded partnership and link payment platforms.
Put in your answer
Dholera partnership: A possible UAE partnership in Dholera could cover an airport, a port, an MRO facility and a smart township.
