Why in news
On 17 May 2026, at Gothenburg, PM Modi and Swedish PM Kristersson raised India-Sweden ties to a Strategic Partnership. Modi also received Sweden's Royal Order of the Polar Star.
What it is
India-Sweden relations rest on shared democratic values, innovation and sustainability. Sweden is a technology and industrial economy with strong defence and cleantech firms. The two countries already work together on climate through LeadIT, a joint global initiative on low-carbon industry.
Upgrade
Relations were raised to a Strategic Partnership. Key areas are green transition, defence, emerging technologies and people-to-people links.
LeadIT
LeadIT is a joint India-Sweden global initiative on low-carbon industrial transformation. The two sides decided to work on its third phase.
Science and Technology Centre
An India-Sweden Science and Technology Centre will be set up to link startups and research ecosystems.
Technology and AI Corridor
The two sides will work on concrete initiatives to strengthen the Sweden-India Technology and AI Corridor.
Defence
Swedish companies setting up manufacturing in India shows a shift from a buyer-seller relationship to long-term industrial collaboration.
India-EU links
The India-EU outcomes cited include the FTA, the Security and Defence Partnership, the Mobility Agreement and the Trade and Technology Council.

Don’t confuse with LeadIT vs International Solar Alliance: LeadIT is a India-Sweden initiative on decarbonising heavy industry. The International Solar Alliance is a treaty-based body on solar energy led by India and France.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Ties raised to a Strategic Partnership covering green transition, defence and emerging technologies. Lasting topic but few testable facts; international items are 19% of Prelims news questions.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
