- Why in news
- Japanese PM Takaichi Sanae made her first official visit to India on 1-3 July 2026 for the 16th Annual Summit. A joint statement was issued on 2 July 2026 covering defence, economic security, energy, technology and regional issues.
- What it is
- The India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership is the highest-level bilateral framework between the two countries. It was raised to this status in 2014 and is reviewed at yearly summits held by the two Prime Ministers, alternately in each country. It covers defence, economy, technology, energy and people-to-people ties, and sits within a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
- Economic security
- They adopted a Joint Declaration on Economic Security Cooperation for project-based work in semiconductors, critical minerals, ICT, clean energy and pharmaceuticals.
- IEA membership
- Japan backed India's membership of the International Energy Agency.
- UNSC seats
- India and Japan agreed to support each other for non-permanent UNSC seats in 2028-29 and 2033-34, and for permanent seats in a reformed Council.
- Investment target
- Both sides noted progress towards the 10 trillion Yen Japanese private investment target set at the last Annual Summit.
Don’t confuse with Quad vs India-Japan bilateral: The Quad is a four-country grouping (India, Japan, US, Australia). The Annual Summit and 2+2 are bilateral India-Japan mechanisms.
Don’t confuse with FOIP vs IPOI vs MAHASAGAR: FOIP is Japan's Indo-Pacific vision. IPOI and MAHASAGAR are Indian initiatives. The statement says FOIP aligns closely with both.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- Strengthens India's Indo-Pacific and Act East strategy with a key partner amid regional maritime tension.
- Supports supply-chain diversification in critical minerals and semiconductors and brings Japanese investment and technology.
Problems
- Trade has not grown as hoped, which is why both sides want to review the CEPA.
- Large projects such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail face delays and timeline pressure.
Way forward
- Speed up the CEPA review and use the fast-track mechanism to ease Japanese investment.
- Turn the declarations on economic security and energy into funded, project-based work.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: 16th Annual Summit outcomes on economic security, AI, energy resilience and biogas. Bilateral ties are tested in Mains (international 27 of 161), but this lacks a clear debate.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
