Why in news
On 6 October 2026, DRDO announced a successful flight trial of its indigenously developed High-Altitude Platform (HAPS), a lighter-than-air stratospheric airship, which reached 21 km.
What it is
HAPS is a lighter-than-air airship meant as a long-endurance stratospheric aerial surveillance platform. It is designed to stay aloft in the stratosphere for long periods and carry sensors and cameras. It is being developed by DRDO's Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra.
Developer
HAPS is being designed and developed by ADRDE, Agra, a DRDO laboratory.
Altitude achieved
The experimental flight reached 21 km above mean sea level and stayed at 20 km for over 30 minutes before being commanded to descend.
Payload and systems
The system carried an inertial measurement unit, a GPS receiver, onboard cameras and an altitude control mechanism.
Agencies involved
The trial was coordinated with the Indian Air Force, CEMILAC, DGCA, AAI and other civil authorities.
Type of platform
HAPS is a lighter-than-air system. It stays up by buoyancy, unlike a fixed-wing aircraft, which relies on lift from its wings.

Don’t confuse with HAPS vs. drones/UAVs: HAPS is a lighter-than-air airship operating in the stratosphere at about 20 km. Typical UAVs are heavier-than-air and fly much lower.

Don’t confuse with ADRDE vs. DRDO: ADRDE, Agra, is one DRDO laboratory that develops aerial delivery and airship systems. DRDO is the parent body.

Defence: Prelims tests exercises (with whom), equipment (who makes it) and firsts.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Defence tech trial with some facts. Defence is 8 of 327 Prelims questions and almost never reaches Mains.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
