- Why in news
- On 30 September 2026, the Union Cabinet approved Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, a scheme to build intra-State transmission and 50 GWh of battery storage, with an outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore.
- What it is
- The Green Energy Corridor is a central scheme to build transmission lines and grid capacity so that power from renewable sources can be carried to load centres. Earlier phases focused on the Inter-State and Intra-State networks. Phase-III adds battery storage to handle the variable output of solar and wind.
- Evacuation target
- The scheme will strengthen intra-State transmission to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy.
- Battery storage
- It provides for 50 GWh of BESS at the generator end or other important grid locations.
- Implementation mode
- Greenfield projects go through tariff based competitive bidding; brownfield upgrades are done on a cost plus basis.
- Implementing agency
- State Transmission Utilities implement the scheme; private Transmission Service Providers join under the BOOM model.
- Climate goal link
- The scheme supports the target of 900 GW installed non-fossil capacity by 2035.
Don’t confuse with GWh vs GW: GW is power capacity (rate); GWh is energy stored or produced. The scheme's 135 GW is evacuation capacity; 50 GWh is battery storage.
Don’t confuse with Greenfield vs brownfield: Greenfield means new projects; brownfield means upgrading or strengthening existing assets.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Strengthens state grids so renewable power can reach consumers, supporting the 900 GW non-fossil target by 2035.
- Battery storage eases intermittency and meets non-solar hour demand.
- Creates jobs in construction, manufacturing and grid operations.
Problems
- State utilities have weak finances and may delay projects.
- Land acquisition and right-of-way problems slow transmission lines.
- Dependence on imported battery cells and critical minerals.
Way forward
- Tie central support to timely state execution and project milestones.
- Promote domestic battery manufacturing and storage-friendly market rules.
- Speed up right-of-way approvals and improve state grid planning.

Statements the way Prelims prints them. Say first, then see the fact.
1.GEC-III is aimed at strengthening the Intra-State Transmission System to evacuate renewable energy.
True. The scheme strengthens InSTS to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy.
2.The scheme provides for 50 GW of Battery Energy Storage Systems.
False. It provides for 50 GWh (energy capacity) of BESS, not 50 GW.
3.Greenfield intra-State transmission projects under the scheme will be implemented through Tariff Based Competitive Bidding.
True. Greenfield InSTS projects use TBCB; brownfield works use Cost Plus Basis.
4.Brownfield upgradation works under the scheme will be awarded through Tariff Based Competitive Bidding.
False. Brownfield upgradation and strengthening are executed on a Cost Plus Basis.
5.The Power Grid Corporation of India is the overall implementing agency of the scheme.
False. State Transmission Utilities are the overall implementing agency.
6.Transmission Service Providers under the scheme participate on a Build-Own-Operate-Maintain model.
True. TSPs participate under TBCB on a BOOM model.
7.Central Financial Assistance under the scheme is meant to offset intra-State transmission charges and keep power costs down.
True. CFA offsets intra-State transmission charges, lowering power costs.
