- Why in news
- On 10 October 2026, TEC (DoT) and ICAR hosted the second meeting of the UN Global Initiative on AI for Agri-Food Systems alongside India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi.
- What it is
- GI-AI4FS is a UN Global Initiative that brings together international organisations, governments, researchers, industry and standards bodies. It aims to promote the use of AI and IoT in agriculture and food systems through cooperation on standards and governance. The ITU coordinates it, working with FAO, IFAD and WFP.
- Coordinator
- The ITU coordinates the initiative, in close collaboration with FAO, IFAD and WFP.
- Indian hosts
- TEC of DoT hosted the meeting jointly with ICAR under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
- Governance agenda
- The meeting discussed the governance structure, Working Group chairs, members, Terms of Reference and priority areas.
- Preceding hackathon
- A 2-day international hackathon on AI for Agri-Food Systems was held on 8-9 October 2026 at the ICAR campus.
- ITU
- ITU is the UN specialised agency for information and communication technologies, headquartered in Geneva.
Don’t confuse with ITU vs FAO: ITU handles telecom and ICT standards and coordinates this initiative. FAO is the UN agency for food and agriculture and is a collaborator.
Don’t confuse with TEC vs ICAR: TEC is the DoT's telecom engineering and standards body. ICAR is the apex agricultural research body under the Agriculture Ministry.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- Common standards and governance for AI in farming can make solutions interoperable and farmer-centric.
- Hosting the meeting links India's digital and agricultural institutions to global rule-making.
Problems
- Weak rural connectivity and low digital literacy limit adoption by small farmers.
- Data privacy, ownership and trust concerns arise around farm data and AI tools.
Way forward
- Build interoperable standards and open, trustworthy AI tools designed around farmers' needs.
- Expand rural connectivity and extension support so pilots scale into practical use.

UPSC’s own questions that come close to this issue, from our Prelims and Mains banks.
No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: UN initiative coordinated by ITU with FAO, IFAD and WFP; worth a card, but a meeting alone gives few testable facts.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
