- Why in news
- On 7 January 2026, the National Statistics Office (MoSPI) released the First Advance Estimates of GDP for 2025-26, putting real GDP growth at 7.4%, up from 6.5% in 2024-25.
- What it is
- Advance Estimates are the first official projection of GDP for a financial year, released by the NSO under MoSPI before the year ends. They use the benchmark-indicator method: the previous year's estimates are extrapolated with sector indicators. They are later replaced by Quarterly, Provisional and Revised Estimates.
- GVA growth
- Real GVA is estimated to grow 7.3%, with services as the main driver.
- Method
- Advance Estimates are indicator-based and use the benchmark-indicator method, extrapolating the previous year's estimates.
- Base year change
- MoSPI is revising the base year of national accounts from 2011-12 to 2022-23. Advance and quarterly estimates will be revised as a result.
- Sector growth
- Agriculture and allied sectors are estimated at 3.1% growth, a moderate rate.
- Real vs nominal
- Real GDP is measured at constant (base-year) prices, removing inflation. Nominal GDP is at current prices.
Don’t confuse with GDP vs GVA: GVA is output minus intermediate consumption at basic prices. GDP equals GVA plus taxes on products minus product subsidies.
Don’t confuse with Advance vs Provisional Estimates: Advance Estimates are the first projections made during the year. Provisional Estimates come after the year ends and are based on more complete data.

Why it matters
- Gives an early read of the economy for Budget planning and policy decisions.
Problems
- Advance Estimates rest on limited indicators and are revised later, so the numbers can change.
- The gap between the production and expenditure approaches (the Discrepancy) is a data-quality concern.
Way forward
- Move to the new 2022-23 base year with updated data sources to better reflect the economy.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Routine annual data release; Prelims economy terms are 13% of news-linked questions but the figures change each year and carry no lasting debate.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
