- Why in news
- On 6 May 2026, the Election Commission said ECINET supported real-time monitoring, faster reporting and cybersecurity in the 2026 Assembly elections and bye-elections, with counting on 4 May 2026.
- What it is
- ECINET is the Election Commission of India's single IT platform and app for managing and reporting election processes. It brings election services and monitoring tools onto one platform to improve speed and transparency.
- App usage
- The ECINET app has crossed 10 crore downloads since its launch.
- Poll-day load
- On the poll days of 9, 23 and 29 April, ECINET recorded over 98.3 crore hits.
- Cybersecurity
- ECINET's protocols countered over 68 lakh malicious hits on counting day, from within India and overseas, aimed at key platforms including the results portal.
- QR-code ID
- A QR code-based Photo Identity Card system was used for the first time at counting centres in all States/UTs. Over 3.2 lakh QR codes were generated on counting day.
Why it matters
- Real-time monitoring and faster reporting improve transparency and public trust in elections.
- QR-based access control strengthens security of counting centres.
Problems
- Election IT platforms are targets of cyber attacks from within India and abroad.
- Heavy traffic on poll and counting days needs resilient infrastructure.
Way forward
- Keep strengthening cybersecurity and capacity for peak loads.
- Audit the platform regularly and keep its processes open to scrutiny.
