- Why in news
- On 3 June 2026, MoSPI released the final uniform guideline for compiling District Domestic Product (DDP) estimates with base year 2022-23. A draft had been put up for feedback on 7 April 2026.
- What it is
- District Domestic Product measures the economic output of a single district, in the same way GSDP does for a State. The NSO under MoSPI has now set one method for States and UTs to follow. This makes district figures comparable across the country.
- Issuing body
- The National Statistics Office (NSO) of MoSPI released the guideline.
- Measures covered
- It covers Gross District Domestic Product, Net District Domestic Product and per capita income at district level.
- Method
- The bottom-up approach is preferred where district data exist. Top-down allocation with indicators is used where district data are inadequate.
- Coverage today
- 26 States/UTs currently compile DDP estimates.
- Net vs gross
- Net domestic product is gross product minus depreciation (consumption of fixed capital).
Don’t confuse with Bottom-up vs top-down: Bottom-up builds district figures from district-level data. Top-down splits a State-level figure among districts using allocation indicators.
Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.
Why it matters
- Comparable district estimates support decentralised planning and regional development analysis.
- Uniform methods let districts be ranked fairly and help target backward areas.
Problems
- Many sectors lack district-wise data, so top-down allocation can misstate local output.
- States differ in statistical capacity, and only 26 States/UTs compile DDP now.
Way forward
- Build district statistical capacity and data systems, with MoSPI support.
- Onboard all States/UTs and shift to bottom-up data over time.
Put in your answer
DDP coverage: 26 States/UTs compile DDP estimates; MoSPI aims to bring in all.
Planning use: DDP is expected to support decentralised planning and evidence-based policy at district level.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting statistics topic with base year 2022-23 and GDDP, NDDP concepts; economy terms are asked in Prelims but this is a niche guideline.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
