- Why in news
- On 23 April 2026, CGTMSE held the Global Symposium on Credit Guarantees in Mumbai with the 38th ACSIC Annual Conference, as part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations.
- What it is
- CGTMSE is a trust that guarantees collateral-free loans given by banks and other lenders to micro and small enterprises. It was set up by the Government of India and SIDBI to reduce lenders' fear of default. Lenders get a guarantee cover on eligible loans, so small firms without collateral can borrow.
- Event
- The Global Symposium on Credit Guarantees was held alongside the 38th ACSIC Annual Conference in Mumbai, as part of CGTMSE's Silver Jubilee.
- Participation
- Delegates came from over 19 countries and 26 organisations, including credit guarantee institutions and policymakers.
- Leadership
- CGTMSE's Chairman is also the CMD of SIDBI, which links the trust to SIDBI.
- Ministry
- The Ministry of MSME is the nodal ministry for CGTMSE; its Development Commissioner gave the keynote.
- Set-up
- CGTMSE was established in 2000 by the Government of India and SIDBI to run the Credit Guarantee Scheme for MSEs.
Don’t confuse with CGTMSE vs SIDBI: SIDBI is the development finance institution for MSMEs that lends and refinances. CGTMSE is a separate trust that only provides credit guarantees to lenders.
Don’t confuse with Credit guarantee vs subsidy: A guarantee covers a lender's loss if the borrower defaults. A subsidy lowers the borrower's cost. CGTMSE offers guarantees, not subsidies.
