- Why in news
- On 16 April 2026, MeitY constituted the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body to coordinate India's AI governance policy.
- What it is
- The AIGEG is an inter-ministerial body created by MeitY to coordinate AI governance policy across ministries, departments and regulators. It gives effect to recommendations in India's AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey. It is an executive body, not set up by a statute.
- Who constituted it
- MeitY constituted the AIGEG as the central institutional mechanism for AI governance policy development and coordination.
- Origin
- It gives formal effect to institutional recommendations in the AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey.
- Chair
- The Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Railways and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, chairs it. The MoS for Electronics & IT and Commerce & Industry, Jitin Prasada, is Vice Chairperson.
- Status in framework
- It is the apex inter-ministerial body in India's AI governance institutional framework.
- Expert support
- A Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) will advise it on global developments, emerging technologies, risks and regulation.
Don’t confuse with AIGEG vs TPEC: AIGEG is the apex policy-coordinating body led by ministers. TPEC is only the expert advisory committee that supports it.
Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
Why it matters
- Gives a single coordinating point for AI policy across ministries and regulators, supporting a whole-of-government approach.
- Links AI deployment to labour-market and social stability concerns.
Problems
- As an executive body without statutory backing, its decisions may lack legal force over regulators.
- Coordination across many ministries and fast-changing technology is hard.
Way forward
- Define clear terms of reference and accountability, and publish its outputs.
- Use the expert committee and consultation with industry and civil society to keep policy current.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: New inter-ministerial body worth reading; non-statutory and new, so UPSC question is unlikely.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
