  1. Power Distribution Reforms and AT&C Losses. DISCOMs post first-ever profit of ₹858 crore in FY25; AT&C losses fall to 16.16%.
  2. Mpemba Effect. Supercomputer simulation by JNCASR shows hotter water can freeze faster, explaining the Mpemba effect.

Power Distribution Reforms and AT&C Losses

GS3 Infrastructure: EnergyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 6 January 2026 the Ministry of Power said provisional FY 2024-25 data show a turnaround in DISCOM health. AT&C losses fell to 16.16% and utilities posted their first-ever profit.
What it is
AT&C losses measure the share of energy put into the distribution system that is not billed or not paid for. They combine technical line losses with billing and collection losses. The ACS–ARR gap is the difference between a utility's average cost of supply and its average revenue realised per unit, and shows how far tariffs cover costs.
AT&C losses
AT&C losses fell from 22.62% in FY14 to 16.16% in FY25 (provisional).
ACS–ARR gap
The gap between average cost of supply and average revenue realised narrowed from ₹0.78/kWh in FY14 to ₹0.11/kWh in FY25.
First profit
DISCOMs and power departments recorded a positive PAT of ₹858 crore for the first time, against a loss of ₹67,962 crore in FY14.
Late Payment Surcharge Rules
Dues to generating companies fell 96%, from ₹1,39,947 crore in 2022 to ₹5,747 crore by December 2025.
Legacy burden
DISCOMs still carry ₹6.39 lakh crore in accumulated losses and ₹7.18 lakh crore in debt, with about 80% concentrated in eight major states.

Don’t confuse with AT&C loss vs technical loss: Technical loss is energy lost in lines and transformers. AT&C loss also includes billing inefficiency and unpaid revenue.

Don’t confuse with ACS–ARR gap vs AT&C loss: The ACS–ARR gap is a money gap per unit between cost and revenue. AT&C loss is a percentage of energy not paid for.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting topic on power sector finances with data. AT&C loss, ACS-ARR gap and DISCOM profit are fresh numbers, but routine data rarely reaches Prelims or Mains.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Mpemba Effect

GS3 Science and TechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 6 January 2026, the Ministry of Science & Technology said JNCASR researchers had run the first supercomputer simulations of ice formation that reproduce the Mpemba effect in water.
What it is
The Mpemba effect is the observation that hot water can sometimes freeze faster than colder water. It is named after Erasto Mpemba, who rediscovered it in the last century, though Aristotle had noted something similar. It belongs to nonequilibrium physics, which studies how systems relax after sudden changes.
Who did it
Researchers at JNCASR, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, ran the simulations.
Mechanism proposed
Cooling water can get stuck in short-lived intermediate molecular arrangements before true ice grows. Different starting temperatures get stuck for different lengths of time.
Nucleation path
Hotter water can sometimes take a quicker path to nucleation, the birth of ice, and so avoid the delays that colder water faces.
Beyond water
The effect can also appear in fluid-to-solid transitions in systems other than water. Models shown include the TIP4P/Ice water model, the 2D Lennard Jones model and the Potts model.
Possible applications
The work may help in understanding out-of-equilibrium phenomena, thermal control in next-generation electronics and better cooling strategies.

Don’t confuse with Mpemba effect vs. supercooling: The Mpemba effect compares freezing times of hot and cold water. Supercooling is when a liquid stays liquid below its freezing point, which is a separate idea.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Concept-based science topic. Prelims asks sci_tech concepts (36 of 57 questions test the concept), but this is a niche research result unlikely to be set.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

PPP Project Pipeline

GS3 Infrastructure: PPPPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 6 January 2026, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, announced a three-year PPP project pipeline of 852 projects worth over Rs 17 lakh crore, following the Union Budget 2025-26 announcement.
What it is
A PPP project pipeline is a published list of infrastructure projects that central ministries and States plan to offer on public-private partnership terms. It gives developers and investors advance notice so they can plan bids and financing. This pipeline is hosted on the PPP in India portal run by DEA.
Who created it
The Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, created the pipeline to implement a Union Budget 2025-26 announcement.
Size
852 projects with a combined cost of over Rs 17 lakh crore.
Coverage
It covers Central infrastructure ministries as well as States and Union Territories.
Purpose
It gives early visibility of potential PPP projects so investors and developers can plan and decide better.
Duration
The pipeline looks ahead for three years.

Don’t confuse with PPP pipeline vs National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP): The PPP pipeline lists projects meant for private participation over three years. The NIP is a broader government-wide list of infrastructure projects, funded from many sources.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting infrastructure financing topic from Budget 2025-26 with numbers (852 projects, over Rs 17 lakh crore), but the pipeline itself is unlikely to be a question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
