National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET)

GS3 Minerals and miningGS3 Critical mineralsPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 26 March 2026, the Governing Body of the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMET) met, co-chaired by Dr Jitendra Singh and G. Kishan Reddy. It reviewed critical mineral exploration and called for a faster pace, startup entry and stronger domestic supply chains.
What it is
The National Mineral Exploration Trust was set up under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, as a non-profit body to fund regional and detailed exploration of minerals. Its money comes mainly from mineral licence holders, who pay a share of royalty to it. The Union Minister of Mines chairs its Governing Body.
Who chairs it
The Union Minister of Coal and Mines chairs the NMET Governing Body. Kishan Reddy held this role at the meeting.
Private exploration role
The Minister wanted Notified Private Exploration Agencies (NPEAs) strengthened, with better access to technology and finance and faster approvals.
Exploration areas named
Ongoing lithium and critical mineral work was cited in the Siwana belt (Rajasthan) and the Salal–Haimna block (Jammu & Kashmir).
Legal basis
NMET was created under the MMDR Act, 1957, as amended in 2015, and is a statutory trust.
Funding source
Holders of mining leases pay NMET a share of royalty, set at 2 percent of royalty.
Forest clearance delays
Forest clearances were flagged as a continuing cause of project delays.

Don’t confuse with NMET vs District Mineral Foundation: NMET funds exploration, through a share of royalty from lease holders. DMF works for communities in mining-affected districts, also funded by a share of royalty.

Don’t confuse with NMET vs National Mineral Development Corporation: NMET is a statutory trust funding exploration. NMDC is a public sector company that mines minerals such as iron ore.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting statutory-linked trust on the syllabus, but this release is a meeting review with no provisions; UPSC has asked few questions on such bodies (7 of 327 Prelims).

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Scheme

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

GS3 InfrastructurePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 25 March 2026 (reported 26 March), the Railways Minister told Lok Sabha that 13 Delhi stations are among 1338 identified under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, and gave work progress at several of them.
What it is
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a Ministry of Railways programme to redevelop stations on a continuous basis. It works through master plans for each station, implemented in phases, to improve access, amenities and passenger facilities.
Scale
1338 stations have been identified so far under the scheme, of which 13 are in Delhi.
Approach
The scheme prepares master plans and implements them in phases, with a long-term approach.
One Station One Product
Master plans include kiosks for local products through schemes like One Station One Product.
Long-term vision
The scheme also plans sustainable solutions, ballastless tracks where needed, and a city centre at the station in the long term.
Road maintenance
Roads outside the railway boundary are maintained by the State Government or local authorities, not Railways.

Don’t confuse with Amrit Bharat Station Scheme vs Amrit Bharat trains: The station scheme redevelops station infrastructure. Amrit Bharat Express trains are a separate service of Railways.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting railway scheme; 1,338 stations identified. Scheme questions are 16% of Prelims, but this release has few testable provisions.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
