  1. Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL). New IITM lab in Delhi identifies real-time pollution sources and toxic composition, linked to AIRWISE forecasts.
  2. Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System. DRDO's indigenous submarine AIP energy module enters Setting to Work Phase-2 ahead of Kalvari-class integration.

Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL)

GS3 Environment and pollutionGS3 Science and TechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 24 October 2026, Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated AATAL, an air pollution analysis laboratory for Delhi NCR, at IITM's Delhi Branch. It is set up under Mission Mausam.
What it is
AATAL is a laboratory at IITM's Delhi Branch under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It combines air measurement instruments, chemical analysis of aerosols and source apportionment. It is linked to the AIRWISE decision support system to guide air-quality management in Delhi-NCR.
Parent mission
AATAL has been set up under Mission Mausam of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Linked system
AATAL is integrated with IITM's AIRWISE, a decision support system that combines forecasts, observations and source-apportionment information.
Forecast resolution
AIRWISE gives forecasts at 400 m spatial resolution for the next 72 hours, so pollution can be assessed for pockets of Delhi.
What it analyses
It analyses the chemical composition of gases and aerosols, including PM2.5, metals and toxic elements.
Users
CAQM and other agencies can use its evidence to target interventions and to strengthen decisions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Host institute
IITM, Pune, is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Don’t confuse with AATAL vs AIRWISE: AATAL is the laboratory for chemical and toxicity analysis and source identification. AIRWISE is the forecasting and decision support system it is integrated with.

Don’t confuse with CAQM vs IITM: CAQM is the statutory regulator for air quality in Delhi-NCR and uses the evidence. IITM is the research institute that produces it.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting topic under Mission Mausam on air pollution source identification, but a single facility with few testable facts; unlikely to be asked.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System

GS3 Defence technologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 24 October 2026, the Setting to Work Phase-2 activity of the DRDO-developed AIP Energy Module was inaugurated at L&T's Hazira complex in Gujarat. The module is meant for Kalvari-class submarines.
What it is
Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) lets a conventional diesel-electric submarine run submerged for longer without surfacing or snorkelling to charge batteries. The Indian system is a fuel-cell based energy module developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), DRDO. It is meant to be retrofitted into Kalvari-class submarines.
Developer
The AIP Energy Module was developed indigenously by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) of DRDO.
What it does
AIP raises the underwater endurance of diesel-electric submarines by cutting their dependence on atmospheric oxygen.
Technology type
The system uses hydrogen and fuel cells, which demand a strict safety culture.
Next step
The module will be energised and tested to Navy protocols, then handed to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited for integration on a Kalvari-class submarine in early 2027.

Don’t confuse with AIP vs nuclear propulsion: AIP extends the submerged time of a conventional submarine, though far less than a nuclear reactor does. Nuclear submarines (SSN/SSBN) need no air and are limited mainly by crew endurance.

Don’t confuse with NMRL vs DRDO: NMRL is one laboratory of DRDO, working on naval materials. DRDO is the parent R&D organisation under the Ministry of Defence.

Defence: Prelims tests exercises (with whom), equipment (who makes it) and firsts.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Indigenous DRDO AIP module for submarines is a lasting defence-tech topic; defence hardware seldom reaches Mains and few Prelims facts here.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Quick facts

  • Government reached its target of 11 crore Farmer IDs under the Digital Agriculture Mission by 23 October 2026, five months before the March 2027 deadline.
