  1. Centaurus X-3 X-ray pulsar. Centaurus X-3 pulsar feeds through an accretion disk, unusual for high-mass X-ray binaries, RRI study finds.
  2. Index of Core Industries (ICI). Core industries grew 7.9% in September 2026, led by iron ore, electricity and coal.

Centaurus X-3 X-ray pulsar

GS3 Science and Technology: SpacePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 October 2026, PIB reported that Raman Research Institute scientists found Centaurus X-3, a bright X-ray pulsar, accretes matter through an accretion disk, which is rare for high-mass binaries.
What it is
Centaurus X-3 is a high-mass X-ray binary: a magnetised neutron star (pulsar) orbiting a massive companion star. It was among the first X-ray pulsars discovered and is one of the most studied binary pulsars because of its brightness. The pulsar pulls matter from its companion and emits X-rays as the matter falls in.
System type
Centaurus X-3 is a high-mass X-ray binary where the companion is over 10 times the Sun's mass.
Usual accretion in HMXBs
In HMXBs, matter normally reaches the neutron star by direct capture of the companion's stellar wind, not through a disk.
New finding
The accretion stream, which carries matter from the disk to the pulsar, causes the variability in the secondary emission lines.
Who did the study
Raman Research Institute, an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology, led by researcher Kinjal Roy.
Neutron star
A neutron star packs about a Sun's mass into a ball the size of a city; it is the dense remnant of a massive star's supernova collapse.

Don’t confuse with Primary vs secondary emission: Primary emission comes from the pulsar's magnetic poles. Secondary radiation is that radiation absorbed and re-emitted by surrounding structures such as the companion's surface, stellar wind or accretion stream.

Don’t confuse with Pulsar vs black hole: A pulsar is a spinning, highly magnetised neutron star. A black hole is a different, denser end-state with no surface.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Concept of pulsars and neutron stars is on syllabus; sci_tech asks concepts (36 of 57), but this study gives no testable fresh facts.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Economy

Index of Core Industries (ICI)

GS3 Economy - Industry dataPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 October 2026 the Commerce Ministry released the provisional Index of Core Industries for September 2026 (base 2022-23). It showed 7.9 per cent year-on-year growth, up from 5.9 per cent in August.
What it is
The Index of Core Industries (ICI) tracks output of nine key infrastructure and industrial sectors. It is compiled monthly by the Office of the Economic Adviser, DPIIT, and the core sectors carry a large weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). It gives an early signal of industrial performance.
Headline growth
ICI grew 7.9% year-on-year in September 2026 (provisional), against 5.9% in August 2026 (final).
Sector split
Iron ore, electricity, coal, refinery products, cement and steel grew. Fertilizers, natural gas and crude oil contracted.
Cumulative growth
April-September 2026 growth was 5.1%, against 2.5% a year earlier.
Base year
The index uses 2022-23 as its base year.
Release schedule
The provisional index comes out on the 20th of the following month, or the next working day if that is a holiday.
Compiler
The Office of the Economic Adviser, DPIIT, compiles the ICI.
Number of industries
Iron ore is added, raising core industries from eight to nine.
Steel data
The Steel Index now uses gross production data instead of net production data.
Coal
Only raw coal is kept; coal middlings and washed coal are dropped to avoid double counting.

Don’t confuse with ICI vs IIP: ICI covers only nine core sectors. IIP covers mining, manufacturing and electricity more broadly, and the core sectors form part of it.

Don’t confuse with Gross vs net production: Gross production is total output; net production deducts items such as own consumption or inputs. The steel index now uses gross.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

Agrivoltaics

GS3 Energy and AgriculturePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 October 2026, the Agriculture and New & Renewable Energy Ministers inaugurated the three-day AgriVoltaics World Conference 2026 in India. The Minister announced a large agrivoltaic programme under the next phase of PM-KUSUM.
What it is
Agrivoltaics is the joint use of one piece of land for crops and solar power. Panels are mounted above the field, usually raised and spaced so that crops can grow and machinery can pass beneath. It aims to ease the competition between food production and solar land use.
Core idea
Solar panels are installed above farmland while crops continue to grow beneath them.
Potential in India
A TERI study estimates about 47.5 million hectares of India's cropland is technically suitable. This is roughly 30% of 160 million hectares.
Cost gap
Elevated and tilted structures make agrivoltaic plants 25-30% costlier than conventional ground-mounted solar. The government aims to bridge the gap by supporting AgriPV capacity.
PM-KUSUM link
The next phase of PM-KUSUM will carry an agrivoltaic programme. The scheme already supports decentralised solar plants, standalone solar pumps and feeder-level solarisation.
Climate-zone framework
A Global Agrivoltaics Climate-Zone Technical Framework was launched to help set standards and move from pilots to wider adoption.
Reported field benefits
Field studies indicate yield gains of 10-20% for certain crops and about 30% lower water use under suitable systems.

Don’t confuse with Agrivoltaics vs ground-mounted solar: Ground-mounted solar replaces farming on the land. Agrivoltaics keeps cultivation going under raised panels.

Don’t confuse with PM-KUSUM vs PM Surya Ghar: PM-KUSUM targets farmers' solar pumps and plants. PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana targets rooftop solar for households.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Concept of combining solar power with farming; lasting syllabus topic. No scheme provisions or testable numbers, so no question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
