National Electricity Policy (Draft 2026)

GS3 Infrastructure: EnergyGS2 Government policiesPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 January 2026, the Ministry of Power released the Draft National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2026 for public consultation. Once final, it will replace the NEP notified in 2005.
What it is
The National Electricity Policy is the Centre's guiding policy for the power sector, framed under the Electricity Act, 2003. The first one was notified in 2005 to tackle shortages, low access and weak infrastructure. The 2026 draft reworks it for distribution reform, renewables, storage, nuclear power and grid operations.
Policy it replaces
The first NEP was notified in February 2005; the draft will replace it once finalised.
Climate alignment
Emissions intensity 45% below 2005 levels by 2030 and net-zero by 2070.
Resource adequacy planning
DISCOMs and SLDCs prepare RA plans at utility and state levels. CEA prepares the national plan.
Nuclear goal
The draft links nuclear expansion to the SHANTI Act, 2025, aiming for 100 GW by 2047.
Distribution reforms
It proposes a Distribution System Operator and N-1 redundancy in cities above 10 lakh population by 2032.

Don’t confuse with National Electricity Policy vs Electricity Act, 2003: The Act is the law; the NEP is a policy framed under Section 3 of the Act to guide planning and regulation.

Don’t confuse with SLDC vs CEA: SLDCs run grid operations at state level; CEA is the central technical body that plans nationally.

Atal Pension Yojana

GS2 Welfare schemesGS3 Financial inclusionPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 January 2026, the Union Cabinet approved continuing the Atal Pension Yojana up to FY 2030-31, with funding support for promotion, development and gap funding.
What it is
Atal Pension Yojana is a government-backed pension scheme for unorganised sector workers. Subscribers contribute regularly and get a fixed minimum monthly pension after age 60. It is run through the pension regulator PFRDA under the National Pension System framework.
Launch
APY was launched on 9 May 2015 for old-age income security of unorganised sector workers.
Pension amount
The guaranteed minimum pension is Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 a month from age 60, depending on contributions.
Enrolment
Over 8.66 crore subscribers had enrolled as of 19 January 2026.
Extension
The scheme continues to FY 2030-31, with support for promotional and developmental activities and gap funding.
Administration
APY is administered by PFRDA through the NPS architecture.

Don’t confuse with APY vs NPS: NPS is the broad market-linked pension system open to all. APY is a fixed-benefit scheme for unorganised workers within that architecture.

Don’t confuse with APY vs PM-SYM: PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan is a separate pension scheme for unorganised workers with a fixed Rs 3,000 pension. APY offers Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.

NITI Aayog Decarbonisation Roadmaps (Cement, Aluminium, MSME)

GS3 Environment and industryPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 21 January 2026, NITI Aayog released three decarbonisation roadmaps, for the cement, aluminium and MSME sectors, to align industry with Viksit Bharat 2047 and net-zero by 2070.
What it is
These are sector-specific roadmaps by NITI Aayog, India's government policy think tank. They set out how high-emission and high-employment industries can cut emissions while output grows. They were prepared with line ministries, industry, research institutions and knowledge partners.
Cement output
Cement production is projected to rise about sevenfold to ~2100 million tonnes in 2070 from 391 million tonnes in 2023.
Aluminium output
Aluminium production is projected to rise from 4 million tonnes in 2023 to 37 million tonnes by 2070.
Aluminium phases
Short term: RE-RTC power and better grid connectivity; medium term: nuclear power; long term: CCUS.
MSME levers
The MSME roadmap rests on energy-efficient equipment, alternative fuels and green electricity.
Publisher
NITI Aayog is the government's policy think tank, chaired by the Prime Minister.

Don’t confuse with Clinker substitution vs refuse-derived fuels: Clinker substitution cuts process emissions by using materials like fly ash or slag in cement; refuse-derived fuels replace fossil fuels in kilns.

GS2 Welfare schemesGS3 Small savingsPrelims and Mains

Why in news

What it is
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government small savings scheme for the girl child. Parents or guardians open an account in her name to save for her education and marriage. The Government notifies the interest rate and guarantees the principal and interest.

Who can open and where
Parents or guardians can open an account for a girl child from birth until she turns 10, at a post office or a public or authorised private bank.
Tax benefit
Deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Don’t confuse with SSY vs Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao: BBBP is the campaign on the sex ratio and girls' education. SSY is a savings scheme launched under it.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Standing small savings scheme for girls with features and numbers; explainer, nothing new decided today, so a card without a question.
