The answers

Question 1(a) · 10 marks · 150 words written

Write a note of 150 words on the Following: (a) Concept of tribe and Indian census

Opening · a definition

Tribe according to census is the group of families having similar name, share common area and have taboos related to the marriage and religion.

Body · continuous prose

During the British time, colonial administrators developed tribes based on the distinctiveness from the caste people.

For instance in 1871, first time tribes and caste were separated during the survey.

But they ignored the cultural contact between the local Hindu and peasant population with tribals.

Colonial administrators wanted tribal people to remain separate so that they will not be a part of national movement.

They divided tribes among the various races and portrayed as the original inhabitant of the Indias.

Eg. Risleys survey or racial classification among Indias.

It lead to identification of two separate identities as caste and tribe.

Close · a summary

Later with the efforts of Indian anthropologists it was proved they are two pole of a continuum, and no tribe or caste can be distinctively classified.
