Village studies by S.C Dube

Opening

SC Dube was a prominent sociologist in India who used his anthropological approach to study Indian villages.

His most remembered is that of Shamirpet village near Hyderabad. He visited this along with a group of doctors, educationist, policy makers etc.

SC Dube tried to understand the dynamics of prestige and power in the village. The relations of Jajmani that connected the economic interdependence were observed, but were slowly disintegrating in the onslaught of mobility conditions.

According to SC Dube, there are six factors based on which a person's position in village is determined

Body · points and prose

→ Land ownership → Age → Government job → Religion and caste → Wealth → Distinct personality trait.

For status-differentiation, these factors played a crucial role. SC Dube followed the approach of Structural functionalism as by Robert Redfield and focussed on Interventionist role of Social Sciences.
